Today is World Spay Day, a time to recognize the profound impact that spaying and neutering have on reducing pet overpopulation and improving animal welfare. At the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, we see firsthand how this simple medical procedure can save lives and create a healthier, more compassionate community.
Our clinic team performs approximately
30 spay/neuter surgeries
each surgical day for shelter and community member pets, ensuring that more animals live longer, healthier lives while helping to prevent countless unwanted litters.
Spaying and neutering provide far-reaching benefits for pets, their families, and the entire community. The most immediate impact? Preventing unwanted litters, which helps control the pet population, protects community health, and reduces the number of animals entering shelters. But the benefits go beyond population control:
✅
For female pets – Spaying eliminates the risk of ovarian and uterine cancer and significantly reduces the likelihood of mammary cancer, especially when done at a young age.
✅
For male pets – Neutering eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and reduces the likelihood of prostate issues.
✅ Neutered males are less likely to roam, reducing their risk of injury or getting lost.
✅ Studies show that neutered males are less likely to bite or exhibit aggressive behaviors.
✅ Spaying and neutering help curb urine spraying, aggression, and excessive roaming—making pets easier to live with and train.
At CASPCA, our most powerful tool in population control is increasing access to spay/neuter services. To keep these services affordable, we rely on grants and donations to lower costs for pet owners, including those receiving public assistance.
Currently, we offer spay/neuter services for cats of all genders and male dogs by appointment only.

Every dog and cat adopted from CASPCA is already spayed or neutered, ensuring that no adopted pet contributes to pet overpopulation. By reducing the number of unplanned pregnancies, spay/neuter programs help:
🐾
Lower shelter intake numbers – Fewer homeless pets entering shelters.
🐾
Reduce euthanasia rates – Preventing overcrowding saves lives.
🐾
Improve overall animal welfare – Fewer unwanted litters means fewer animals suffering from neglect or abandonment.
Simply put,
spay/neuter services are lifesaving.
Spaying and neutering not only help individual pets live healthier, happier lives but also reduce animal suffering on a larger scale.
✅
Spread the word – Encourage friends and family to spay/neuter their pets.
✅
Support affordable spay/neuter programs –
Donate to help us keep these services accessible.
✅
Book an appointment – If your pet is not yet spayed or neutered, now is the time!
Together, we can create a future where
every animal thrives. Thank you for being a part of the solution! 🐾❤️
