Surrendering Your Pet to the SPCA

Once you have tried the alternatives and/or re-homing your pet and have had no luck, then you should try your local shelter. Surrendering your pet to the SPCA may be very traumatic for your pet and is not a quick process. To ensure that you are given the time and attention you deserve and that we have the space and accommodations your pet deserves, please make an appointment by filling out the online surrender profile. and a staff member will contact you within 48 hours. Appointments last approximately 30 minutes.

Making An Appointment

The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA accepts surrendered animals by appointment, and can ONLY accept pets who live in Charlottesville or Albemarle County.

Please bring the following with you to your scheduled appointment:

  • Your drivers license
  • All veterinary records
  • Any medications your pet is taking
  • Payment for the continuing care of your pet.
    • $75 per animal for litters of puppies/kittens and adult pets not spayed or neutered or up to date on vaccines.
    • $50 per animal for adult pets who are spayed or neutered and are up to date on vaccines.
