26th Annual Eastminster Dog Show to be held on Wednesday, May 15th

Charlottesville, Virginia: It’s time to groom your dog, practice your tricks, and get your best canine costumes ready, because the 26th Annual Eastminster Dog Show is right around the corner! This year’s show will take place at the Keswick Hunt Club (adjacent to Keswick Hall at 701 Club Drive, Keswick, VA) on Wednesday, May 15th, following the Keswick Horse Show. Dogs and their families are invited to compete in seven fun-filled classes of competition including: Best Costume, Best Trick, Best Family, Musical Chairs, Best Rescue, Beginner’s Obstacle Course and Best In Show. Event sponsors, Animal Connection and Lynne Goldman Elements, will provide prizes for each class of competition. Registration for this family friendly event begins at 5:00 p.m. with the show kicking off at 6:00 p.m. Of course, spectators are welcome. Admission and entry is free but donations to the SPCA are encouraged. All competing dogs must be spayed or neutered. Adoptable SPCA dogs will also make an appearance in the ring, attempting to impress and win the heart of a potential adopter.

“For the last twenty-six years, the Eastminster Dog Show has been one of our most anticipated family events.” says Lisa Lane, SPCA Director of Marketing and Development. “At the SPCA, we love to see pets in costume so we look forward to the Eastminster Dog Show each Spring. Whether your dog is competing or you’re just coming to watch, it’s a ton of fun for everyone! The SPCA is so grateful for event organizers Ginny Semmes and Peggy Augustus and our event sponsors, who make this fun tradition and our lifesaving programs at the SPCA possible.”

The mission of the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the lost, abandoned, and homeless animals of the City of Charlottesville and the County of Albemarle and to increase the number of these animals being placed in appropriate, loving, and permanent homes through adoptions, foster care, and outreach, and to set a standard of excellence and leadership in shelter animal care, humane education, and progressive animal welfare programs.

Charlottesville, Virginia - On Sunday, September 30th from 11am to 3pm, the Charlottesville- Albemarle SPCA is holding its annual low-cost Rabies Vaccine Clinic to celebrate World Rabies Day. Pet owners can have their pet(s) vaccinated at the SPCA during this clinic for just $10.00 per pet. Virginia state law requires all dogs and cats over the age of four months to be vaccinated against rabies. Attendees must bring all dogs on a leash and all cats in a carrier. Pet owners will need to show proof of current rabies vaccine in order to receive a three-year vaccine. The clinic is first come, first served and limited to vaccines available.

The SPCA reminds the public that keeping your pets’ immunizations up-to-date is the best way to protect yourself and your family from the rabies virus. Event organizer Beth McPhee, the SPCA’s Director of Business Affairs, notes that the Rabies Clinic “is just another of the many ways the SPCA reaches out to help the community care for their pets. The rabies clinic and the SPCA’s low-cost spay/neuter program are an important community service” Affordable Spay/Neuter appointments will also be available through the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA.

Charlottesville, Virginia: Now through August 31st, the SPCA is offering an outrageous deal on all Certified Pre-Owned Cats older than one year. From shorthair tabbies, tuxedos, Torties and Siamese, to longhair Maincoons, Calicos and more, there are plenty of makes and models to choose from at the SPCA, Purrin’ at Pantops, Petsmart at the Hollymead Center and the SPCA Rummage Store. Individual mileage might vary, but all come with the most adorable features and the softest upholstery. Best of all, these felines are available for no money down, zero percent financing, and absolutely NO PAYMENTS…ever! Four-paw drive and a 100,000-purr warranty are standard; all buyers will receive a CatFax history report. This deal even includes services normally costing hundreds of dollars: spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations, deworming, FIV/Felv testing, a free nose-to-tail inspection from participating vets, a bag or Science Diet cat food, an animal behavior CD and a lifetime of priceless love and companionship.

The warmer months are the breeding season for cats, inundating shelters with kittens available for adoption. “Because kittens are so cute, during this time, older cats in shelters are often overlooked,” explains Lisa Lane, Director of Marketing and Development for the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. “People fail to realize that our pre-owned cats are better than new! These pre-owned models often come pre-trained, they tend to be calmer and wiser; and because they are full grown, you know what you are getting. Cats don’t find themselves at a shelter because they are unreliable or a ‘lemon.’ Many have simply gotten lost or outlived their former owner.”

For more information about the SPCA call 434-973-5959 or visit our website at www.caspca.org. The SPCA’s main adoption center is located at 3355 Berkmar Drive in Charlottesville and is open seven days a week from 12 PM – 6 PM The mission of the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the lost, abandoned, and homeless animals of the City of Charlottesville and the County of Albemarle and to increase the number of these animals being placed in appropriate, loving, and permanent homes through adoptions, foster care, and outreach and to set a standard of excellence and leadership in shelter animal care, humane education, and progressive animal welfare programs.

Charlottesville, Virginia: On Saturday, July 21st from 1 to 3p.m. it will be all Kittens and Cupcakes for the kitten fostering open house at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. Families are invited to come decorate cupcakes while learning about the SPCA’s life-saving foster program. Prizes will be awarded for the cupcake decorated most like a cat, kitten bottle-feeding demonstrations will be given, and experienced foster parents and staff will be available to answer questions about fostering. The majority of animals in the SPCA foster care program are babies too young to be placed for adoption. These kittens and puppies simply need a safe, nurturing environment where they can play and grow.

Summer is the breeding season for cats, which leads to unwanted kitten births. Historically, the SPCA takes in more than 1,200 homeless kittens each year, most of which arrive during the summer months. “With our limited resources, it would be impossible for the SPCA to care for all of these kittens without the hundreds of families that volunteer to foster kittens each year. Every foster home is truly saving a life. We could not be a No Kill Community without the help of these Community foster homes,” says SPCA Clinic Manager Michelle Hamlin. The SPCA provides the medical care, including all vaccinations, and assists new foster homes with whatever they may need. Hamlin says “most of our foster parents have found it to be an absolute joy, sharing their homes with playful kittens or puppies. Many families have also found their participation in the foster program to be very rewarding and a wonderful learning experience for their children.”

This event is free, but attendee are encouraged to bring a gift for the kittens from the “kitten wish list” found on the SPCA’s website.

Charlottesville, Virginia: Have you seen the Dogs & Cats Around Town? Nineteen dog and cat statues lovingly decorated by local artists are gracing the storefronts of seventeen local retail locations, all to benefit the animals at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. Raffle tickets to win these fabulous works of art are available for purchase from the retail location housing each statue or also online at caspca.org. The creativity displayed in these statues ranges from “Sirius,” a dog covered in locally sourced river stones, a cat named “Frida,” reminiscent of a Diego Rivera painting, and even the appropriately named “Grisham K9 Editor,” adorned in an original John Grisham manuscript.

Event organizer Cynthia Viejo says, “I am so excited to organize the first annual Dogs & Cats Around Town raffle. This fundraiser brings together my three passions – supporting local business, local artists and of course, the animals. The hope is to increase traffic at local businesses and support local art–all while raising funds for the animals. It truly is a win-win for everyone involved.”

Statues will remain in their respective local business locations until Saturday, September 8th, when the winners will be drawn. To learn more about the artists and the inspiration for their creations, please follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/CharlottesvilleDogsAndCatsAroundTown. Statue locations are as follows: The Virginia Shop, Chimney Corner, Lynne Goldman Studio, VanNesa Luggage & leather Goods, The Happy Cook, Whimsies, Shenanigans, Scarpa, and Rebeccas Natural Foods all in the Barracks Road Shopping Center; the Men and Boys Shop, The Cat House, and New Dominion Book Shop on the Downtown Mall; and Natalie Dressed at 1051 Millmont Street, Bageladies Café at City Market, West Main Design at 731 W Main Street, Snows Garden Center at 1875 Avon Street Extended, and City Clay at 301 W Main Street.
