Dear SPCA community,
Thank you to everyone that has provided support to the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA this week. We have been monitoring the rapidly evolving situation around COVID-19 closely, and due to our concern over the wellbeing of our staff, volunteers and community, we will be moving to an appointment only system starting Tuesday, March 17. Information is below on making an appointment for adoption, foster and community services. Our hardworking staff will still be coming in to provide care for animals but we feel that it is in the best interest of our staff, volunteers and community to limit the number of people entering the shelter.
We will, of course, be continuing to handle pound services, such as housing and caring for animals impounded by Animal Control and stray animals brought in by citizens and providing redemption services to pet owners. We will be suspending our public spay/neuter services for now based on the American Veterinary Medical Association’s recommendation that all elective procedures be deferred. Thank you so much for your support while we navigate getting as many animals out of the shelter as possible while reducing the risk of spreading COVID-19 in our community.
Our greatest need right now is to find placement for our animals through adoption and foster. The World Health Organization (WHO) states there is no evidence that companion animals or pets such as cats and dogs could spread the virus that causes COVID-19. As always, after touching a pet or other animals, be sure to wash your hands! We have lots of great cats and dogs that would love to come to stay with you permanently or temporarily. You don’t have to weather the pandemic alone, adopt or foster!
ADOPTION- If you are interested in adopting an animal, please fill out an adoption application on our website, and a staff member will be in touch.
FOSTER- If you want to become a foster, visit our website and complete a foster form. Once you complete the form, you’ll be able to select an appointment time. If you are a current foster, visit the Current Foster page of our website and select the appointment link.
COMMUNITY SERVICES – If you need to redeem your pet or need support from our Pet Food Pantry, please contact us at 434-973-5959 or email email@example.com. During this time, we are asking people that are considering surrendering an animal to please keep their pets at home. This will allow us to focus our resources on animals that are already in our care.
If you are experiencing any symptoms of illness, or have been around a person with symptoms, please do not visit the shelter until you have been medically cleared.
We are truly appreciative of your support and understanding. Please stay safe.
