Skyler, now known as Susie, is a young hound mix puppy that was transferred to the CASPCA from a shelter in Houston to make room for animals displaced by Hurricane Harvey. She arrived in very poor shape, suffering from a severe case of demodectic mange and infections in her ears and eyes. She was covered in scabs that were very painful when touched and had a mild fever. Skyler was placed in critical care and immediately started on a treatment regime. At the three-week mark, Skyler had showed much improvement. Her skin was no longer inflamed and her fur had slowly started to grow back. Her eyes and ears were no longer infected and she was made available for adoption.
A day after she was made available, she was fortunately adopted into a loving home and renamed Susie. Susie’s new mom brought her in for a visit exactly two months after the day she arrived in Charlottesville from Houston. The CASPCA staff were very pleased to see how beautiful she had become! She had the biggest smile on her face and sat like a good girl for many treats that she was given.
Her mom relayed that she and Susie took a trip to Florida for Thanksgiving. Susie enjoyed playing with other dogs, running on the beach and swimming a little; she delighted in rolling in stinky things she found in the sand! She is still learning, especially when it comes to chewing things – but is enjoying life with her new mom and her puppyhood immensely!
This holiday season, please think of the thousands of animals we have saved and the thousands more we have yet to save.
